| NVSR will take in any Sheltie in need regardless of age, except those with histories of repeated, unprovoked biting. Dogs accepted into rescue will be evaluated in foster homes, receive veterinary care and necessary resocialization and ultimately be placed in homes where they will be loved, protected, and well cared for. Also, as we support efforts to reduce pet over-population, all of our Shelties will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption or if not yet at an appropriately safe age to be neutered, placed on a spay/neuter contract at the time of adoption. |
| Many of these Shelties come from shelters, found as strays or turned in by owners who can no longer care for them. Others are relinquished directly to rescue. Reasons for relinquishment range from the truly tragic to the maddeningly frivolous. Most have the potential to become very loving pets, though many carry physical and/or emotional 'baggage' from their problematic pasts. Frequently, a Sheltie who does poorly in one family situation will thrive when placed in a different home. |
| Initially, the dog receives a full veterinary examination, including spay/neuter if necessary; vaccinations and necessary diagnostic test, including Heartworm. The dog is then placed in a temporary foster home where he will be carefully evaluated. Foster families work on correcting whatever problems exist (including basic training) and provide a sense of security and stability during the transition period. Every effort is made to make sure that the right dog is placed in the right home. Each dog has it's own personality and is unique in his own way. Because of this, not every Sheltie will fit in just any home. |
| Potential adopters need to complete an adoption application which is either available on this site or can be obtained by calling one of the people listed under contacts. The detailed questionnaire enables NVSR to find the right Sheltie for your family and lifestyle. Upon review, NVSR will contact the prospective adopter about Shelties currently available and will schedule a home evaluation. |
| NVSR makes every attempt to place the right dog with the right family and hopes that all adoptions smoothly. However, if the adoption doesn't work out for any reason, the Sheltie MUST be returned to NVSR. |

| Foster homes are the backbone of any rescue group. Without people who are willing to open their hearts and their homes to homeless Shelties we would not be able to keep saving lives. We are in urgent need of foster homes. |
| As with any animal rescue group, there are always things we need. Financial contributions are critical to cover the cost of caring for the foster Shelties. Items such as x-pens, crates, medicines, food, grooming table, grooming equipment, collars, leashes, dog beds, baby gates, dog toys, and blankets/pads for crates are always needed. |
