Is a Sheltie the Right Dog for Your Home?
Shetland Sheepdogs are highly sensitive, intelligent dogs and loyal family companions—but they are not the right fit for every home. At NVSR, we believe informed decisions lead to successful, lifelong adoptions.
Shelties were bred to work alongside shepherds in the rugged Shetland Islands, and those roots still shape who they are today.
What to Know about Shelties
➤Barking: This Is a Vocal Breed
Shelties are a vocal breed. Shelties communicate about everything—from excitement to concern—though individual dogs vary.
➤Strangers & Shyness: Not Everyone Is a Friend
They can be shy, reserved, or suspicious of strangers. Many Shelties prefer to observe first and warm up on their own.
➤Emotional Sensitivity & Household Chaos
They bond deeply with their humans. Shelties are intensely loyal and form strong attachments to their people.
They are sensitive. Loud noises, sudden changes, and emotional tension can be stressful for some Shelties. A calm, orderly home without chaos will suit them best. If they are especially sensitive, most respond to gradual exposure to desensitize them to scary sounds or new situations.
➤Exercise, Training & Mental Stimulation Needs
They are smart, active, and easy to train. Shelties thrive on mental stimulation and daily exercise. They often excel in activities like agility, obedience, rally, and herding. A bored Sheltie will find a “job”, and you may not approve of the assignment.
➤Time Commitment
They don’t like being alone. Shelties thrive when they are part of daily family life, not left alone for long stretches.
➤Herding Instincts
They may have strong herding instincts. Moving objects— such as kids, bikes, cars, or cats— may be irresistible to some Shelties. (See “Shelties are smart, active, and easy to train.”)
➤Grooming & Shedding Reality
They require consistent grooming. Their double coat needs regular (weekly) brushing to maintain the health of their skin and coat. While your home may have Sheltie fur, they do most of their shedding in spring and fall.
